Tokyo governor rallies allies for July 2nd election

The so-called Tokyoites First Party, which Yuriko Koike effectively controls, has seen as a recent surge in popularity and is aiming to dethrone the majority held by Shinzo Abe’s LDP in the upcoming poll. Dozens of graduates from Koike’s School of Hope, a private academy for her political acolytes, will be standing against the ruling party.

The candidates have also seen the backing of political heavyweights and other parties.
