The so-called Tokyoites First Party, which Koike effectively controls, has seen as a recent surge in popularity and is aiming to dethrone the majority held by Shinzo Abe’s LDP in the upcoming poll. Dozens of graduates from Koike’s School of Hope, a private academy for her political acolytes, will be standing against the ruling party. The candidates have also seen the backing of political heavyweights and parties, including Komeito.
However, Koike, who is a former LDP lawmaker, will see some tough challenges, especially in regards to a relocation plan for the famed Tsukiji fish market, which is in limbo after Koike called for a probe into possible contamination at the new site.
